LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Reform of BOG should go above party politics

I was excited to see movement on WVU's Board of Governors as reported in The Dominion Post.

While our elected leaders meet to discuss legislation to hopefully avoid future incidents like the one involving the governor's daughter, it made me ask: What preventive measures could have been taken before this scandal?

In 2005 and 2006 House Bill 3330, introduced by then delegate and the legislation's coauthor, Cindy Frich, which would have protected the academic freedom and integrity of faculty and students.

The bill would have made it difficult for this blemish on WVU to ever happen. HB 3330 addressed transparency in search committees, fairness in selection and accountability, but it was never acted upon by the House leadership.

We need to be above impropriety in our institutions of higher learning. The simple fact that our legislators cannot get past party politics to pass reasonable laws contributed to the Bresch scandal and the problem with our state .

I hope this meeting to improve our BOG is not just a dog and pony show because it is an election year.
