Local Briefs Column: Byrd Issues Call for Safer U.S. Mines

Jan. 13—U.S. Sen. Robert Byrd, DW.Va., said Wednesday he wants to see broad safety enforcement issues at coal mines across the country. "I remain very concerned about whether enough is being done to prevent more mining disasters from occurring," Byrd said. He wants to make the "culture of safety," especially improved technology, a focus at the first Congressional mine health-and - safety hearing, according to a press release from Byrd's Washington, D.C., office. Federal mining officials, as well as representatives of labor, business and academia with expertise in mine safety, will be invited to testify at the hearing. W.Va. Wireless program to benefit Sago Mine Fund West Virginia Wireless is sponsoring "Donate A Phone," a used cellular phone drive to raise funds for the Sago Mine Fund. Used wireless phones in any condition may be dropped off at any West Virginia Wireless retail store through Feb. 3. All proceeds will be donated to the Sago Mine Fund. Contributions to the fund exceed $3 million. West Virginia Wireless hopes to be able to donate approximately $20,000. Preston accident victim identified KINGWOOD — Police said Thursday the man killed in a log truck accident Wednesday in Preston County was Terry Alien Broadwater, 26, of Swanton, Md. Broadwater was a passenger in a log truck driven by Randall Lee Garrett, 33, of Mountain Lake Park, Md. The truck ran off the road while southbound on W.Va. 26 near the Old Iron Furnace, north of Albright, and overturned. Broadwater, who was not wearing a seat belt, was partially ejected and died from his injuries. Garrett was treated at Ruby Memorial Hospital. Preston Sheriff's Cpl. R.V. Turner investigated, along with the West Virginia Public Service Commission. The truck is owned by Dixon Excavating, of Keyser. Tucker County man files for delegate seat KINGWOOD — Another candidate has thrown his hat into the ring for the 46th District House of Delegates race, which includes part of Preston and all of Tucker County. Democrat Chris Cooper, of Davis, Tucker County, filed Wednesday with the Secretary of State's office. Also in the race for the 46th are incumbent Debbie Stevens, a
Tucker County Republican, and Thomas Loughry, a Rowlesburg Democrat. Filing for the May primary continues through Jan. 28. Eminent domain is topic of House bill Delegate Cindy Frich, RMonongalia introduced legislation Wednesday to prohibit the state from exercising a right of eminent domain to take private property. House Bill 4005 prohibits the state from taking property when it is for commercial development that would be owned or controlled by another private entity. Frich is lead sponsor of the bill. Co-sponsors are delegates Mike Hall, R-Putnam; Greg Howard, R-Cabell; Charles Trump, R-Morgan; Pattie Eagloski Schoen, R-Putnam; Larry Border, R-Wood; William Anderson, R-Wood; Patrick Lane, RKanawha; Bill Hamilton, RUpshur, and John Ellem, R-Wood.
