LETTERS TO THE EDITOR ELECTION 2008

No substance to charges against former lawmaker

Former [Morgantown] Councilwoman Teresa Miller wrote terrible falsehoods in her letter to the editor (DP-Oct. 24), to attack former Delegate Cindy Frich, which included quotes used by Delegate Barbara Fleischauer in a local radio interview Oct. 20.

Let's try to set things straight. Frich never filed charges against anyone for throwing hot chocolate on her. But, that nonsense was spread around town in Fleischauer's 2006 election telephone poll attacking Frich. Fleischauer spent $10,000 on that effort, alone.

Well over a half million dollars was spent to defeat Frich.

Frich bought her own billboards in 2006. So many of her signs were destroyed and stolen it was easier to buy billboards that could not be stolen. After the election, under another candidate's request, police found Frich signs in a Fleischauer donor's property.

Don Blankenship [CEO and president of Massey Energy] bought councilman Jim Manilla's billboards, not Frich's. The "And for the sake of the kids" campaign seemed designed to elect Manilla on Frich's coattails. Frich had nothing to do with that effort.

Frich has received donations from hundreds of folks, dozens of endorsements from groups that monitor the Legislature, and even donations from colleagues in the House and Senate whi would enjoy working with her.

Despite being a minority member of the House of Delegates, Democratic Party leadership allowed Frich to bring home lots of funding for projects.

[As for] Fleischauer and Miller picking a petty fight, to the contrary, during the two years the Frich served with Fleischauer, more bills that had Frich's name as sponsor became law than bil with Fleischauer's name. How can that be so, when Frich was just a freshman Republican minority member and Fleischauer was a seasoned legislator or "team player" as she calls herself?

Frich has been effective. Frich has worked with Democrat and Republican legislators from all over the state to get things done. However, Frich is willing to stick her neck out and say "No" when things are not right.

Do the big pieces of legislation that Frich sponsors and fights for bear her name as lead sponsor when they pass? Frich has worked with others from the start, not caring whose name on an important piece of legislation, as long as it becomes law.

What voters should think about is that the other candidates asking for your vote fought against and voted against reforms Frich fought for which have moved West Virginia forward.

John C. Frich Jr., MD..... Morgantown
