Legislative interims begin in town

The Dominion Post

Funding West Virginia's highways is one topic state legislators will face Sunday through Tuesday at the legislative interims in Morgantown.

Tom Witt, director of the WVU Bureau of Business & Economic Research, will present his ideas on the transportation topic to the Select Committee C Infrastructure Committee at 6 p.m. Sunday at the Radisson Hotel, Wharf Rooms A and B.

About 40 legislative meetings dealing with a variety of topics are scheduled throughout the three days, and are open to the public.

Joint committees, made up of both Senate and House of Delegates members, study issues that might lead to proposed legislation during the regular session.

Interim sessions are held every month when the state's part-time Legislature is not in regular session. Many interims are held in Charleston, but some are held in other cities. All 134 members of the state Legislature, and as many staffers, are scheduled to be in town Sunday through Tuesday.

Committee meetings are scheduled from noon-6 p.m. Sunday at the Radisson Hotel; and at the WVU Mountainlair from 9 a.m.-6 p.m. Monday and from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Tuesday.

WVU experts will speak at several other committees, according to a WVU news release:

"School Financing" — 9 a.m. Monday, Blue and Gold Ballroom, WVU Mountainlair. Legislative Committee: Education Subcommittee C. Presenters: Tom Witt and Mehmet Tosun, WVU Bureau of Business & Economic Research.

"Minimum Wage Laws" — 1 p.m.

Monday, Blue Ballroom, WVU Mountainlair. Committee: Judiciary Subcommittee B. Presenters: Tom Witt and Mehmet Tosun, WVU Bureau of Business & Economic Research.

"Economic Impact of WVU on the State" — 11 a.m. Tuesday, Blue Ballroom, WVU Mountainlair. Committee: Joint Commission on Economic Development. Presenters: Randy Childs and Tom Witt, WVU Bureau of Business & Economic Research.

Delegate Cindy Frich, R-Monongalia, is holding a public reception for residents to meet legislators from throughout the state.

The public is invited to attend and mingle, Frich said. The event is set from 4 p.m.-7 p.m. Sunday at the Lodge at BOPARC's Dorsey's Knob. Because of limited parking at Dorsey's Knob, a shuttle service will be offered to and from the Radisson Hotel and Conference Center at Waterfront Place.
