By now, there should be very few people on campus that have not heard or read about the "No Budget Cuts for Higher Education" effort. Many papers throughout the state and even The Daily Athenaeum have carried articles (and even some ads) regarding the "no cuts" stand.
Cindy Frich, a delegate from the 44th District, went so far as to put ads in several papers asking citizens tu contact the governor and ask him to stop cutting higher education. Our local legislators have been quoted in the press giving their support to WVU and higher education.
We need to let these folks know we appreciate their support and efforts to help us. Now it is up to the rest of us to keep pressure on the governor and the legislature to ensure no further cuts next year. Take time today to write a letter or make a phone call. If you need an address or phone number, please call the Staff Council office or send an e-mail to staff@mail.wvu.edu.
Although the "No budget cuts for higher education" is important, there are other things happening on campus that also touch our lives.
Blood drives are occurring almost every week somewhere on campus and the region's blood supplies continue to fall short of the needs. Giving blood is a great non-monetary way to give back to the community.
Faculty and staff are reminded that WVU has a policy that allows blood donations without the use of sick or annual leave, up to six times a year. If you have trouble getting to use this policy, contact the Employee Relations unit of Human Resources (293-5700) or the Staff Council Office (293-5865),
Starting next week on Sunday, Oct. 26, Diversity Week hits campus. I strongly encourage you to take advantage of the Diversity Week offerings.
This year's theme is "Valuing Our Own." and many speakers are from right here at WVU. Most of the events take place in the Mountainlair and you will find a detailed schedule of events at http://www.wvu.edu/ -socjust/di versity-week.htm, Employees are encouraged to participate in Diversity Week arid just need to work with their supervisors on attending events that interest them.
Lunch with the "Amigos" takes place on Thursday, Oct. 30, at noon in Hatfields. Several well-known University administrators are cooking a special meal that day, and it's too good to pass up.
As Diversity Week comes to a close on Oct. 31. WVU Homecoming begins. Do not forget about attending the parade that Friday night and showing your support for the students and alumni involved.
