Commission meets to certify election results

FAIRMONT — The Marion County Commission will be reconvening as the Board of Canvassers at 3 p.m. today to certify the results of the Nov. 2 general election.

They will meet at the Marion County Commission meeting room on the fourth floor of the J. Harper Meredith Building.

Commission President Randy Elliott will call the meeting to order so as to certify the election. He will ask Marion County Clerk Janice Cosco if anyone has called for a recount. She will answer yes or no. Her answer will determine how the process will flow.

Anyone desiring a recount has until 3 p.m. today to ask for one.

Any party who is granted a recount will cover the costs of that recount.

State Senate Republican candidate Cindy Frich has not ruled out a recount, but has concerns about the expense of a recount.

Democrat Bob Beach barely beat out Frich in the contest for the state Senate’s 13th District. According to unofficial results, Beach won by only 213 votes, receiving a total of 16,727 votes to Frich’s 16,514 votes. Frich said she gained more votes from both Marion and Monongalia counties during canvassing.

Potential court challenges to canvassing procedures could also be costly, Frich said. Any potential court action could tie up certifying other races.

Many states have a trigger needed for an automatic recount, but not West Virginia.

“I wish a recount wasn’t so expensive because people have a right to know their vote counted and that elections are fair,” she said.
